Intent Statement

We believe that music should be an enjoyable experience for everyone. Children participate in a range of musical experiences, building up their confidence at the same time. They develop their understanding of rhythm and pitch and learn how music is structured, as well as learning technical vocabulary for these elements. As children’s confidence builds, they enjoy the performance aspect of music. Children experience listening to music from different cultures and eras. 

In music we intend for our curriculum

• to allow time to think about our response to and appraise a variety of music from different times, traditions and cultures and consider our opinions on it; 
• to learn about a variety of musical traditions, composers, eras and cultures;
• understand the importance of teamwork and cooperation in the world of music;
• discuss the music they hear and play and be able to confidently talk about the pieces; 
• understand that practice is essential in improving performances in music and that   professional musicians practice for longer that they perform;
• participate in a variety of musical performances in different roles.    

We want children to appreciate the place of music within Christianity and other faiths and religions. Children will understand that music is universal and uniting; no matter what a person’s heritage they can appreciate, share, celebrate and value music from different cultures. They will foster an appreciation for making music and will be given opportunities to learn an instrument and perform in different contexts and venues.
